Frugals, a drive-through burgers and fries place, has recently opened by the WalMart in Sartell.
The stainless steel building with a retro feel is a drive-through only. There is no indoor seating, but there are two services windows - one on each side of the building.
It is a chain restaurant, but still a small one. The first restaurant was opened in Port Angeles, Washington in 1988. Franchise opportunities began in 2004. According to information on FrugalBurger.com, the new Minnesota location is only the fifth. There are three in Washington and one in Montana according to their website.
I stopped by on a Saturday afternoon and local residents eager to try the new burgers were forming long lines around the building.
On your first visit you may feel a little pressure if someone is behind you. The menu board is large and all the options may be overwhelming. You may just give in a pick a combo meal, but make sure you check out the included options for your burger like mayo and onions. Also, make sure you notice that you can sub a small milkshake in your meal for only 30 cents more.
The name of the place may be Frugals, but the prices aren't really any cheaper than other fast food places. A cheeseburger combo meal is $5.37, and specialty burger meals are all over $6.00.
While the prices may not strike you as especially "frugal," the burgers are good. I had the pepper jack bacon burger and it was very tasty.
Only time will tell if the WalMart shoppers can keep Frugals going strong in the St Cloud area. There really isn't easy access to the place unless you are doing the WalMart or Sam's Club thing.
If there is a long line when you go, make sure you are committed to staying. Once you're in line there's no way out.
And one more thing: if you are by yourself and you have short arms, make sure you take the right lane!
